Part of Philippine Subic Bay Shipyard Leased Out for Offshore Wind
Cerberus Capital Management agreed to lease part of its 350-hectare Philippine shipyard in Subic Bay to HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering, which plans to build a facility there to manufacture offshore wind platforms.The shipyard was run by Hanjin Philippines before it defaulted on loans worth $1.3B in 2019.
Second Bangladesh Ship Recycling Yard Earns HKC Compliance
M/S. S.N. Corporation’s Unit-02 ship recycling yard at Shitalpur, Sitakunda is now the second ship yard in Bangladesh to become compliant with IMO's Guidelines for Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling. The certification process was undertaken by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, establishing that S.N. Corporation was capable of the intensive procedural and performance standards required under the Hong Kong Convention (HKC). This process was assisted by GMS under its Sustainable Ship & Offshore Recycling Program (SSORP).

Converted and Renamed Emergency Towing Vessel Abeille Normandie
German Naval Yards has converted and and will delivery later in May the high-performance tug Abeille Normandie to the French shipping company Les Abeilles. Hyundai Heavy Industries Applies for IPO Approval
South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd applied for preliminary approval for an initial public offering, Korea Exchange said on Thursday.The company, currently wholly owned by Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, was separated from Korea Shipbuilding in 2019.Hyundai Heavy reported a 2020 operating profit of 32.5 billion won on revenue of 8.3 trillion, Korea Exchange said in a statement.(Reporting by Joyce Lee; editing by Jason Neely)
IN THE YARD: Designing Ship Build and Transport Cradles
Transportation cradles are a key component in the build, transportation and launch of a ship and a suitable design can be fundamental in the success of these operations. Throughout their use they will support the various blocks and completed ship during construction, act as the interface between the vessel and SPMT’s (Self Propelled Modular Transporters) or barge, and ultimately support the ship during float off operations. The cradles are possibly the only item of equipment that will see the ship from very early stages of construction through until she is floating in the water.
High Pressure Water Blasters for Shipyards: Aussie Safe Operator Free Training
Australian Pump, an Australian designer and manufacturer of high-pressure cleaning equipment, was chosen to design and build 4,000 psi high pressure water blasters for Sydney’s Garden Island Dockyard. The machines, called the Aussie Atlas, feature an all stainless steel construction and produce a 4,000 psi 16 liter per minute performance. Designed for working on a wide range of vessels in the dry dock, the machines offer fast and efficient cleaning.With up to 30 machines working at any one time in the dock, safety is key.
Ship Repair: Bayonne Drydock Invests in Shiplift
Bayonne Drydock & Repair in Bayonne, NJ, reported brisk business in 2019, with the BDDRC floating drydock and graving dock in use approximately 98 percent of the time, according to Bob Magas, General Manager Commercial Operations, BDDRC. Driving business was a variety of topside repair projects with existing clients, as well as three “successfully completed MSC vessel drydockings, on time and on budget,” according to Magas. This trio of jobs was enhanced as BDDRC “engineered and installed a roller fendering system in our graving dock,” said Magas.
